It is a scary feeling to see water backing up into your toilets or sink. It is an immediate sign that something is wrong with your system.
Let’s first discuss why this happens.
First: Clogs
A septic system is a series of pipes and tanks that have many places where clogs and buildups can occur. This can be a tree root growing through a pipe wall that is cracked, the buildup of fats, oils, and grease, a random Spiderman toy thrown into the toilet by a child (Ask me how I know!), or things like wipes getting stuck in certain bends in the piping systems or Ts.
Finding the root of the clog is important. Part of our assessment process is to look through clean-out portals (if the home has them), locate the septic tank, removing the lids, and looking for clog points and/or using sewer cameras to locate cracks in the pipes where tree roots may be growing in.
Once the reason for the clog is identified, we use various tools to break up and clear the clog. Often, we can do this within minutes of locating it.
Second: Settling and Cracks
When a septic system – a series of pipes and tanks – is installed, it’s critical that it’s installed with the right fall and footing. This keeps the pipe in place for maximized functionality. But, over time, poor work, poor soil, or poor equipment can cause pipes to crack, sag, or disconnect – creating conditions for elements to enter your septic system that can create clogs.
Once a clog is located, we go right to the source to fix the clog. We also do a double check with flushes from inside the house to check the fall and flow rate.
Occasionally, we find that the inlet or outlet Ts are sagging, showing the need for repair. These projects require us to dig around the piping to locate the issue. Our skilled team can repair or replace the pipes and footing as needed, ensuring that your system is free to work in the way it’s designed.
From there, reviewing the contents that are going into your system and scheduling regular maintenance can often prevent future clogs.
