The job of your septic system is to take the sewage from your house, utilize the science of anaerobic decay and the engineering of a well-built septic tank, and allow effluent water to be purified through the soil before it reaches the groundwater.
With that in mind, it’s important to ask ourselves, “Is what I am flushing helping or hurting that process?”
So, Can You Flush Other Things?
Normal human waste and appropriate toilet paper do not hurt your system; in fact, the bacteria and breakdown of those materials are what actually make the system run correctly.
But things such as wipes, medicines, bleaches, cleaners, feminine hygiene products, call can cause compromises to your system. These compromises are either due to clogs in the system or to killing the much-needed bacteria in it.
So, before you throw anything down the toilet, think about its impact on your system. When in doubt, just throw it out, don’t flush it!
